Yet another example of rural achitecture in the Portuguese province of Alentejo: this time the small cottage has a blue stripe around the walls, doors and windows; the small construction on the left it's a small wood oven. On the foreground, marigolds and poppies are some of the most frequent flowers in Alentejo, in summertime.

Ainda outro exemplo da arquitectura rural alentejana: desta vez o "monte" está embelezado com vivos azuis, em redor das paredes, portas e janelas; a construção mais pequena à esquerda é um típico forno de lenha. Em primeiro plano, malmequeres e papoilas são duas das flores mais características da paisagem alentejana durante o Verão.

Another sample of the typical rural achitecture of Alentejo: this time no ochre-yellow band, just plain white - very useful when the temperature in the summer climbs to 44 and even 45 degrees Celsius in the shadow (that's 112 to 113  Fahrenheit ) ....

Monsaraz is a little medieval village beautifully kept and restored, that became almost an island  in the big lake of the Alqueva dam - the largest artificial lake in Europe. This street leads to one of the old entrances in the city walls.

After a break (and what a break, almost eight month! ) I made peace again with the Internet and it is time to return to my blog. I apologize to all my friends by the long absence, but as you will notice, it was worth it. I have a lot of new paintings that I hope you will enjoy. Please feel free to comment, to let me know what you think about it, ok? To start with, here is an oil on canvas scene of the Ardila River - a tributary of the Guadiana, the biggest river in Alentejo, in the South of Portugal. An "all green" painting, just landscape, no human presence: we all feel like that, once and awhile, is it not ?  :)

Depois de uma pausa (e que pausa, quase oito meses ! ) lá fiz as pazes com a Internet e já é tempo de voltar ao meu Blog. As minhas desculpas a todos os meus amigos pela longa ausência, mas, como terão oportunidade de ver, valeu bem a pena: tenho uma quantidade de quadros para apresentar, que espero sejam do vosso agrado. Por favor digam-me nos vossos comentários o que pensam deles, eu agradeço o vosso feedback. Para começar, um oleo sobre tela do Rio Ardila, um afluente da margem esquerda do Guadiana, o maior rio do Alentejo. Um quadro "todo esmeralda", apenas paisagem, sem presença humana: às vezes, sentimo-nos assim, não é mesmo ? :)

This painting marks my return to acrylics and took me quite some time to finish, because it required some new solutions not yet tried, like my own "special" method to paint the cubic stone floor and some other bits and ends. Anyway, I had promised myself  to finish it before the New Year, so here it is. The scanner I used its not quite tuned so I expect to replace this photo with a better one in a couple of days. The Arch of the Viscount, with its tall buildings and somehow irregular walls, its one of the typical spots in the city of Moura, south of Portugal.

Este quadro, que marca o meu regresso ao acrílico, levou-me bastante tempo a terminar porque requereu o uso de algumas técnicas que eu ainda não tinha experimentado, incluindo o meu "próprio" método de representação da calçada de cubos. De qualquer forma, tinha prometido a mim próprio terminá-lo antes do final do ano, e aqui está. O scanner que usei não me parece  estar muito afinado, portanto tenciono substituir esta foto por outra dentro de alguns dias. O Arco do Visconde, com os seus edifícios altos e as suas paredes irregulares,  é um dos locais mais típicos da cidade de Moura, no Alentejo.

The Convent of the Carmo, in the city of Moura, south of Portugal, was the first convent of the Order of the Carmo in the Iberian Peninsule, founded during the ruling of Afonso III, King of Portugal, in 1521. From there, some monks of the Order went to Lisbon, where  they founded the Convent of the Carmo of Lisbon.

O Convento do Carmo, na cidade de Moura, foi o primeiro estabelecimento da Ordem do Carmo na Península Ibérica, fundado no reinado Afonso III, em 1521. Foi daqui que partiram os monges que fundaram o Convento do Carmo de Lisboa, a convite de Nuno Álvares Pereira.

This painting shows a partial view of the city of Moura, in the Portuguese southern province of Alentejo. Displayed are the most iconic landmarks of the city: the XI Century castle, one of the ancient doors in the city walls, the clock tower, a small palace, the old market and the ancient moorish quarter.

Este quadro apresenta uma vista parcial da cidade de Moura, no Alentejo. Nele, podemos ver os elementos mais icónicos da cidade: o castelo do século XI, uma das antigas portas nas muralhas, a torre do relógio, uma casa apalaçada, o mercado municipal e a antiga mouraria.

Roman bridge and Watermill / Ponte Romana e Azenha de Roda

A recent problem with my PC kept me away from the Net, but thanks to it I have now a string of recent works ready or nearly ready to publish in this blog :) In this painting, we see a more usual type of watermill easy to find anywhere in Portugal, in oposition to the last one I'v published, of the Moorish type. The Roman bridge its located in the vicinity of Moura, in the Portuguese province of Alentejo. In fact, I conveniently set together two elements found in different locations in Alentejo, "bonded" here by their common elements: water and stone.

Um problema recente com o meu PC tem-me mantido afastado da Net, mas, graças a isso, tenho agora um conjunto de trabalhos recentes prontos e quase prontos para publicação neste blog :) Neste quadro está representado um  tipo mais vulgar de azenha de roda vertical,  facil de encontrar em qualquer província de Portugal, em oposição aquela que publiquei no ultimo post, e que é do modelo Mourisco. A ponte Romana localiza-se nos arredores da cidade de Moura, no Alentejo. De facto, montei convenientemente dois elementos encontrados em dois diferentes locais do Alentejo, "colados" aqui pelos seus elementos comuns: agua e pedra.

Azenha Mourisca no Guadiana / Moorish-style Watermill in the Guadiana River

In the old days, before the internal combustion engine and the electricity, the Guadiana River in the south of Portugal, had plenty of these watermills; the water wheel was sometimes placed horizontally under the building. The one you can see in the painting was made following the moorish model, an heritage of the Moor occupation of the Iberian Peninsule during the Middle Age.

Antigamente, antes dos motores a combustão e da electricidade, no rio Guadiana podiam encontrar-se dezenas destas azenhas; a roda de água era por vezes colocada horizontalmente sob o edifício. A azenha representada aqui foi construída seguindo o modelo mourisco, uma herança da ocupação moura do sul da Península Ibérica, durante a Idade Média.

Once a very small farming operation, was transformed by the actual owners into a very charming Farm Hotel, taking advantage of several small cottages - like the one seen on this painting - and now receives guests from all over the world.

While further south they are a kind of "trademak"in the landscape, almond trees are not vey common in Alentejo. Nevertheless, there are enough to give it a try at painting them. In this essay, there are some closer and some more distant, some more detailed and some more sketchy, some in white and some in rose; all in order to gather knowledge to future works...

Embora mais a sul sejam uma marca distintiva na paisagem, as amendoeiras não são assim muito comuns no Alentejo. No entanto, existem as suficientes para justificar uma tentativa em pintá-las. Neste estudo, algumas surgem muito próximas e outras mais afastadas, algumas mais detalhadas e outras mais simples, em branco ou em rosa; tudo com o fim de juntar conhecimentos para um futuro trabalho...

Alqueva Dam / Barragem de Alqueva

The Alqueva Dam, in the southern province of Alentejo in Portugal, originated Europe's largest artificial lake, with over 1.100 Km in perimeter. Its water is used to produce "green" electricity and also to agricultural purposes. This beautiful and impressive lake brought a huge increase in tourism in the region of Alentejo, one of the most remote (and well preserved) in Portugal.

A Barragem de Alqueva, situada no Baixo Alentejo, originou o maior lago artificial da Europa, com mais de 1100 Km de perímetro. A sua água é usada na produção de energia "verde" e também para fins agrícolas. De forma igualmente significativa, este magnífico lago trouxe um incremento enorme à procura turística para esta região, que é uma das mais remotas e bem preservadas de Portugal.

Church of St. Mary of the Castle / Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo

The church of St. Mary of the Castle in Moura, Portuguese southern province of Alentejo, was built in the XVI century and ceased to to be used as a temple in the late XVIII century. For many years it was abandoned and left to fall in ruins until recently, when it was recovered. Is now being used as a beautiful space, open to multicultural and multiartistic exhibitions.

A Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo em Moura, Alentejo, remonta ao século XVI e foi usada como local de culto até ao fim do século XVIII. Desde então ficou abandonada e encontrava-se praticamente em ruínas até recentemente, quando foi recuperada. Serve agora como um espaço belíssimo para exposições e manifestações culturais e artísticas.

Church of St. John the Baptist / Igreja Matriz de S. João Baptista

The Church of St. John the Baptist is located on the main square of Moura, a small city in the southern province of Alentejo - Portugal. This monument was build in the Middle Ages and remains to this day as the most important, well decorated and best preserved church in the city - That's where I got married  :))

Despite being built in the Middle Ages, this monument has a very important and characteristic feature: the portal. Very impressive and over-worked, carved in white limestone, was added only in the early XVI century. Its in a style called "Manuelino", designed to celebrate the Portuguese discoveries and bold navigations, and its said to be one of the finest examples of that particular style.

A Igreja Matriz de S. João Baptista localiza-se na praça principal de Moura, Alentejo. Foi construída na Idade Média e é ainda hoje a maior, mais bem decorada e melhor preservada igreja da cidade. - Eu casei-me ali :))

Apesar de remontar à Idade Média, o seu portal Manuelino foi-lhe acrescentado já no início do século XVI; é um portal impressionante, muito trabalhado em pedra calcária branca, sendo considerado um dos portais de estilo Manuelino mais puro.
